MANAGEMENT OF PAVEMENT PLANTS
It is the ethos of Manningtree Town Council to protect the natural environment as much as possible. With this in mind, the vegetation growing in the streets is not sprayed with herbicide, principally glyphosate, due to ongoing research finding it to be harmful to bees as well as there being documented harmful effects on domestic pets and potentially humans.
In agreement with both Tendring District Council and Essex County Council, the pavement plants are therefore managed by the Manningtree Street Keepers, a team of local volunteers who remove unwanted vegetation from the pavements and gutters by hand.
Please note that it is not permitted for anyone to spray weedkiller in a public place unless licensed to do so or under the direct guidance of a licenced holder. It therefore follows that Manningtree residents are not allowed to spray herbicide outside the bounds of their own property.
The Manningtree Street Keepers are always keen to welcome more volunteers. Anyone interested is welcome to contact the Clerk for more information. Fiona Coley, clerk [at] manningtreetowncouncil.gov.uk
